It can be really hard to find beautiful products where both the design and production take place in Australia, so we want to shine a light on them…meet Milkweed.
Alisa and Melissa are the women behind Milkweed, a Melbourne based company making products for babies and their gorgeous nurseries. Alisa answered a couple of questions for us so that we could get to know them better.
Mel and I met waiting tables at a hotel, she was studying graphic design and I was studying art. We then lived together and now have a business together. We’ve known each other for 10 years this year!
Alisa is our illustrator, who hand paints all the designs featured on MILKWEED products. Using watercolour and pencil, she draws inspiration from Australian animals, fairytales and nature.
Melissa is our graphic designer. She takes Alisa’s illustrations and creates the fabric used to make our beautiful products.
This means that MILKWEED products are entirely original and the designs and illustrations featured cannot be found anywhere else.
At The Nursery, we’re big believers in doing what we can to reduce our impact on the environment. We recycle soft plastics like ninjas, break down boxes and reuse packaging materials to send out with new orders. In fact, our waste is so minimal, that we would rarely fill a garbage bag! How does Milkweed feel about environmental responsibility as a business?
We both have a strong feeling of responsibility for the environment and supporting local business. This became the basis for MILKWEED.
All of our design, products and production is sourced in Australia. Where possible we use environmentally gentle production methods and recycled materials. This makes running the business trickier than if we didn’t care so much about the origins of our products – but this is our main mission. While it’s more work and more expensive, we’ve developed wonderful relationships with local people, as well as a beautiful boutique product. As we’re designing for nurseries and babies, it seems particularly important that we look at a sustainable future both environmentally and economically.
Don’t worry Mel, I also love Trace, Serial and a little podcast called The Teachers Pet! I can’t wait to bring you some more Australian stories on the blog soon.
