What size clothes should I buy as a gift?
If you've never had a baby, then the weight and height (which is usually included in the birth announcement), will likely mean nothing to you.
If you then want to buy an outfit for the new arrival, get ready to be overwhelmed because everything you look at seems way too tiny and the sizes are multiples of zero, giving you no indication which might be for a newborn.
Wouldn't it be easier if birth announcements read:
Baby 'Jimmy' joined us at 2:30am January 21, 2019 measurements akin to a Size 0000 but he won't be there for long so buy a size 000! He's a big boy! Mum and baby are doing well.
Even if you have had a baby, the chances are you were so tired that you could barely remember your own name, let alone the size clothes your child wore!
Fear not, The Nursery is here to help
- If a baby weighs in at more than 4kg (or the parents announce their new arrival as the new heavyweight champion of the world) then skip the smallest size (0000) and head to the next size up which is 000.
- If you are buying more than one outfit, buy a few different sizes.
- Keep in mind the season the baby is born in. Generally, unless in the middle of summer, I would dress a newborn in an all-in-one (long sleeves, long legs). Even throughout Summer, newborns will need all-in-ones to sleep in so buy a mix of long and short sleeve outfits.
- For an average baby:
- 0000 = Newborn
- 000 = 0-3 Months
- 00 = 3-6 Months
- 0 = 6-12 Months
- 1 = 12-18 Months
I hope this helps,
